Children might forget things easily, but when someone repeated the same message in his ear all the time and he still saw Daddy every day, even the fact that Daddy never responded to him before had never made Dragon Cub think Daddy was bad.
Although he was closer to the steward, in the moment when he was most afraid, the memory that imprinted itself most deeply was Daddy protecting him. The steward was not here now, so naturally Dragon Cub did not think of him.
Dragon Cub might still be tiny, but Uncle Su Chen had already explained more than once how he had been born and had even shown him photographs of Su Xing with a large pregnant belly. As a result, Dragon Cub had no concept of needing a mother. He knew Daddy had given birth to him, and he did not need a mommy.
Big Dragon was completely bewildered. He stared at the tiny creature in front of him who was trying to make him eat grass and could not imagine why he would ever have chosen such a weak mate. More importantly, this little creature was clearly male…
Big Dragon still could not tell what species the tiny creature belonged to, but he could certainly distinguish male from female. Could someone explain how a male had given birth to a cub? Even with no memories, instinct told him that males were not supposed to be able to give birth.
“Did you hear that? You still have a cub to raise, so you have to eat all of this.” Su Xing had not understood what Big Dragon said, but he had understood Dragon Cub perfectly.
Big Dragon looked at the grass once again held to his mouth and finally opened his enormous jaws and swallowed it. His cub and mate were both so weak. If anything happened to him, how could he possibly feel at ease leaving them alone? But this grass tasted absolutely damned awful…
Su Xing worried there would not be enough, so while feeding him, he forced some more plants to grow. Fortunately, Big Dragon’s stomach had been empty for so long that Su Xing did not dare feed him too much at once. Otherwise, he would probably have made him vomit.
Big Dragon was not a true tyrannosaurus, after all. Even when eating plants, he could still absorb the energy they contained.
And the effect was obvious. Before eating, Big Dragon’s voice had been extremely faint; he had only barely been able to make a sound. After eating, the next noise he made was more than twice as loud.
Su Xing was very satisfied. His greatest worry had been that the energy in the plants would not be enough for Big Dragon to absorb. If that were the case, they would be in trouble. With Big Dragon’s size, where was Su Xing supposed to catch enough sand-gravel worms to feed him?
Dragon Cub was a filial little child. Seeing how miserable Big Dragon looked while eating grass, he caught a few sand-gravel worms for him, hoping to improve his meal.
“Grrru grrru.” Big Dragon had far too much pride to steal the food his cub had worked so hard to find. He firmly refused and told the cub to eat it himself. It definitely was not because the sand-gravel worms were so tiny that they were hardly worth eating.
“Be good, Dragon Cub. Your father prefers eating grass.” Su Xing could not understand the words, but he could tell Big Dragon’s tone was not gentle. More accurately, Big Dragon seemed to have no idea how to be gentle at all, and Dragon Cub looked a little hurt.
“Chirp chirp chirp chirp.” Dragon Cub had heard Father say the grass tasted terrible, so he did not entirely believe Su Xing.
“Compared with sand-gravel worms, your father still prefers grass.” Su Xing changed his wording. As he spoke, he looked at Big Dragon. He was not afraid Big Dragon would deny it. Even if he did, Su Xing had ways to make him agree.
“Grrru grrru.” Big Dragon had lost his memory, not his intelligence. He could sense Dragon Cub’s disappointment. At this point he stopped thinking about his pride and admitted that Su Xing was right.
“Chirp chirp chirp.” Hearing Father confirm it, Dragon Cub was no longer quite so disappointed. But he still could not understand one thing. Little worms were so delicious, so why did all the grown-ups like eating grass?
From then on, the grown-ups who “liked eating grass” began a life of eating grass every day. Big Dragon in particular needed at least three hundred jin a day because of his enormous size.
If Su Xing had not needed to divide his ability energy between treatment and forcing plants to grow, leaving him with limited reserves, Big Dragon probably would have eaten even more.
Just when Big Dragon felt as though his entire body was about to grow mold and sprout grass, sensation finally began returning. At first his forelimbs could move slightly, and then his hind legs gradually became mobile as well.
The moment movement became possible, the family of three decisively changed locations. The place where they had been staying had become far too polluted. If they had had any choice, they would have moved long ago.
It was obvious when one thought about it. Big Dragon ate an enormous amount, which naturally meant he also had to digest and eliminate an enormous amount. Even though Su Xing cleaned up every day in the direction of the wind, without water it was impossible to remove everything, and the smell lingered.
During missions in the apocalypse, Su Xing had smelled every kind of foul odor imaginable, including the much worse stench of masses of zombies. He was not especially squeamish, but cleaning up this mess every day was still annoying. The fact that Big Dragon was recovering made him extraordinarily happy.
Being able to move did not mean Big Dragon could stand and walk, however. For this relocation, Su Xing had to use plants to help shift him bit by bit, which took a great deal of effort.
As Big Dragon recovered, they moved more frequently. Everywhere around them looked more or less the same anyway. There was nothing in this landscape worth feeling attached to.
After Big Dragon could barely stand, Su Xing treated him for another month. Big Dragon finally regained the ability to walk normally. Three months after they had been stranded here, their family could at last set out to look for meat.
Author’s Note: Dragon Cub: Grown-ups have such strange tastes. They all love eating grass!
Big Dragon: It’s already been three months without meat. When is this going to end?!
Su Xing: Dragon Cub is easy to raise, and Big Dragon is even easier. Raising dragons really is the best. Thank you to all the little angels who sent me Overlord tickets or poured nutritional solution for me between 2020-10-05
