A patient had developed an abnormality, and for the doctor to request an examination was entirely reasonable. As long as Wei Yin ended up in her hands…
But what Kalida had not expected was that Major General Sain would refuse.
The moment Major General Sain heard Kalida’s words, he let out a cold laugh. Immediately afterward, a vast surge of mental power poured from his consciousness cloud, forming an almost tangible spiritual pressure that crashed down onto Kalida’s shoulders with crushing force.
Caught completely off guard by the impact, Kalida went down as though someone had suddenly kicked her, dropping to her knees.
Only after seeing Kalida kneeling there in such a sorry state did Major General Sain seem satisfied, and he withdrew the spiritual pressure. But even releasing it for those few brief seconds placed an enormous strain on mental power that was already overloaded.
Major General Sain rubbed one temple with a hand as though trying to massage away the pain in his consciousness cloud. His mood became even more irritable because of it. His voice rose until it was almost a roar. “I told you, he belongs to me. What the hell are you that you dare reach out and touch something of mine?”
Kneeling on the floor, Kalida breathed slightly harder. A layer of cold sweat had already broken out over her body. Hearing Major General Sain’s words, she was utterly baffled, then cursed inwardly—he really was a lunatic. What the fuck kind of logic was this?!
But Kalida did not dare say that aloud. She could only remain kneeling, put on an obedient and frightened expression, and quietly defend herself. “Major General, you’ve misunderstood. These examinations are all necessary. Ever since Madam was little—”
“Enough.” Major General Sain gave a cold snort and cut Kalida off. “I’m not interested in what he was like as a child. Now give me more medicine and make him a little more responsive—oh, right. If you make him stink like yesterday again, I’ll kill you.”
Kalida shuddered all over. She understood that Major General Sain was not joking.
Kalida gritted her teeth. Still unwilling to give up the chance to examine Wei Yin, she tried again. “Major General, if we increase the dosage without an examination, I’m afraid it may damage Madam’s brain—”
“Didn’t he marry into this family so I could play with him?” Major General Sain lifted his chin and looked impatiently at Kalida. “Are you giving me the medicine, or do you want to die?”
At last, Kalida shut up. She hurriedly took a box from the medical kit she carried with her and said, “This is today’s dose. I’ll send another portion over later. Madam’s condition is unusual, so it would still be better to increase the dosage gradually.”
Once Major General Sain had the medicine, his mood improved considerably, and he did not continue demanding the same dosage as yesterday.
Major General Sain poured the medicine into his palm. There were two white pills.
“That’s all?” Major General Sain sounded dissatisfied, but he still moved efficiently and fed the pills into Wei Yin’s mouth.
Wei Yin opened his mouth blankly. The pills dissolved the instant they touched his tongue, and he instinctively swallowed.
Major General Sain watched Wei Yin expectantly for a reaction, but Wei Yin remained as wooden as ever. Major General Sain’s face immediately cooled. He turned toward Kalida. “Why is he still like this?”
Kalida wanted to know why too! But if you won’t let me examine him, how the hell am I supposed to know?
There was no reasoning with a madman. Kalida opened her mouth, then closed it again, completely at a loss for what she could possibly say without provoking Major General Sain all over again.
“Tsk. Why are you still kneeling there? Go get the rest of the medicine.” As Major General Sain spoke, he raised his voice. “Charlie.”
Charlie immediately appeared beside the sofa.
Major General Sain: “Go with her to get the medicine. Bring back more. As for this woman, make her get the hell down the mountain and stay in the wooden cabin.”
“Yes, Major General.” Charlie bowed, then smilingly escorted Kalida out the door and instructed one of the personal guards to “see” her off.
Kalida had only just walked down from the villa’s small garden when Luo Mengmeng came up from the other side. She glanced in the direction Kalida had gone and asked Charlie, “Was that Madam’s doctor?”
Charlie nodded, then smiled at Luo Mengmeng. “The Major General is waiting for you.”
  “Mm.”
Luo Mengmeng went inside with Charlie and saw that Major General Sain had completely abandoned his nouveau-riche brute persona from moments before. He was now speaking softly and gently to Wei Yin in his arms.
Charlie: “Major General, Luo Mengmeng is here.”
Major General Sain turned his head and held out his hand toward Luo Mengmeng.
Seeing this, Luo Mengmeng reached out to take what he offered and found two pills in her palm. She immediately understood. “This is Madam’s medicine?”
“Mm. Find out what’s in it. I want results as soon as possible.” After Major General Sain finished speaking, he turned back to coax Wei Yin again.
Luo Mengmeng asked curiously, “What happened?”
“He was frightened just now.” Major General Sain sounded both guilty and distressed. He continued speaking softly to the wooden Wei Yin. “Wei Yin, I’m Lanser…”
Wei Yin remained in his wooden-puppet state, but his tongue moved against the roof of his mouth. There was still a sweet taste in his mouth. “…Yangyang.”
Shangyang: “You ate candy pills. Major General Sain had them hidden between his fingers.”
  Wei Yin: “That’s not it.”
Shangyang: “Then what are you asking?”
Wei Yin: “He didn’t wash his hands after putting my socks on just now.”
  Shangyang: “…”
Wei Yin: “And those were the same socks I wore this morning!”
  Shangyang: “…”
The more Wei Yin thought about having eaten his own foot, the more aggrieved he became, until he suddenly let out an “Awoo!” and burst into tears.
Wei Yin’s completely unannounced wailing startled everyone in the room. He cried like a child, snot and tears everywhere, great drops of tears quickly soaking his cheeks.
“I’m sorry. I frightened you…” Major General Sain became flustered. He hurriedly wiped Wei Yin’s tears with his fingertips and apologized again and again like a helpless idiot father.
Wei Yin: “And now he’s wiping my face with that same hand!”
  Shangyang: “…”
Wei Yin felt unclean. His whole body seemed to smell like socks. So he wailed even more miserably. After carrying on like that for quite a while, he finally stopped with hiccupping breaths. Still twitching from the crying, His Exalted Mouth finally opened to complain, “Lanser… hate you!”
Major General Sain laughed instead—if Wei Yin was still willing to talk to him, that was good enough.
“Mm. Lanser was wrong. I’m sorry.” Major General Sain sincerely admitted fault. He had Charlie bring a warm towel to wipe Wei Yin’s face, then brought over the fresh fruit Wei Yin liked and placed it in his hands. Only then did Wei Yin gradually calm down.
Luo Mengmeng stared. “Major General, Madam… wasn’t he unable to speak?”
Earlier she had noticed that something about Wei Yin was off, but it had only been a vague sense of incongruity. She would have needed an examination to confirm anything. Never in her wildest dreams had she expected the truth to be like this.
“Mm. This cannot leave this room.” Major General Sain’s gaze toward Wei Yin was gentle. From time to time he used the towel to wipe fruit juice from Wei Yin’s face. “Take a look at him first.”
Hearing that, Luo Mengmeng immediately understood why Major General Sain had asked her to come earlier.
“Yes.” Luo Mengmeng answered, then focused and extended her mental tendrils toward Wei Yin.
But the instant her mental tendrils reached toward him, Wei Yin lifted his head and looked directly at them—his gaze focused precisely on the mental tendrils in the air that ordinary people could not see.
Luo Mengmeng was startled and involuntarily stopped—what was going on? Could Madam actually see them? That was impossible. The An family had clearly said Madam’s consciousness cloud had already collapsed.
Wei Yin blinked. Two seconds later, he suddenly reacted as though facing a mortal enemy, ducked into Major General Sain’s arms, and shouted, “Lanser, spider!”
Major General Sain more or less understood what was happening now, though he was still uncertain. So he smiled and gently guided Wei Yin. “That isn’t a spider. Those are mental tendrils. Does Wei Yin know what those are?”
“Spider!” Wei Yin clutched Major General Sain’s clothes, apparently terrified. “Lanser, chase away. Don’t want!”
Seeing Wei Yin react so strongly, Major General Sain shook his head at Luo Mengmeng, and Luo Mengmeng withdrew her mental tendrils.
“Wei Yin, don’t be afraid. The spider is gone. Don’t be afraid.” Major General Sain coaxed him until Wei Yin finally lifted his head again.
Wei Yin looked around at the empty air, then visibly relaxed.
Luo Mengmeng and Major General Sain exchanged a glance. Both saw the same delight in the other’s eyes—Wei Yin really could see them!
Luo Mengmeng grew a little excited. She said to Major General Sain, “Major General, can I try my spirit form next?”
Major General Sain glanced at her and nodded.
Luo Mengmeng took a step forward, bent down with her hands braced on her knees, and gave Wei Yin a bright, approachable smile. “Then, Madam, can you see this?”
As she spoke, Luo Mengmeng held out her palm. A monkey suddenly appeared above it. The monkey was very small and had huge eyes. It looked a little like a tarsier, though it clearly was not nocturnal, and the claws on all four limbs certainly did not look like a joke.
Wei Yin’s attention was immediately drawn to it. Obviously, he could see it.
This time, the joy of everyone in the room was impossible to conceal—to see a spirit form required a certain amount of mental power. Some low-level Sentinels and Guides not only did not possess spirit forms of their own, they could not even see other people’s spirit forms.
The An family’s diagnosis of Wei Yin had been wrong. Wei Yin’s consciousness cloud had not collapsed.
What did that mean? It meant Wei Yin could still become a Guide—a Guide carrying the bloodline of the An family’s descendants! If—if Wei Yin could recover, then could he perhaps become Major General Sain’s Guide?
Luo Mengmeng bit the tip of her tongue to calm herself down a little. Only then did she smile at Wei Yin again and gently coax him step by step. “Madam. This is my spirit form. Its name is Little Good. Do you have a little friend like this too? One that stays with you all the time, and that you can put away so other people won’t discover it?”
She knew how to interact with children. She spoke gently and slowly, making sure Wei Yin understood her.
Wei Yin did indeed understand, but he seemed terribly conflicted. His eyes darted around, then he lowered his head and refused to look at Luo Mengmeng. He pressed his lips tightly together and started picking at his fingers.
That expression already answered the question.
Luo Mengmeng looked toward Major General Sain and tilted her head slightly—your turn. He only listens to you, Major General.
Major General Sain understood. He also spoke softly. “Wei Yin, can you let me see your little friend? I promise I won’t tell anyone else.”
Sure enough, once Major General Sain spoke, Wei Yin wavered.
Wei Yin raised his head and looked at Major General Sain. “Really?”
Major General Sain: “Mm. I promise. I won’t tell anyone. Luo Mengmeng and Charlie won’t either.”
Charlie and Luo Mengmeng immediately cooperated, raising their hands and solemnly swearing to keep the secret.
Wei Yin believed them. He smiled, looking a little smug. “I have one. I have a big cock!”
  Major General Sain: “…”
  Luo Mengmeng: “…”
  Charlie: “…”
Shangyang: “…” You really are something, Wei Yin.
Luo Mengmeng bit her lip, turned her head aside, and gave a muffled cough, swallowing the laugh that had almost escaped.
Major General Sain’s expression was equally spectacular. It took him several seconds to regain his composure. “Then… can you show me your big… little friend?”
“Mm!” Wei Yin nodded. He handed the half-eaten fruit in his hand to Charlie, then held both hands out in front of himself. Frowning and pursing his lips as though straining with all his might, he stared at the empty space between his palms.
Wei Yin: “Guide Yang, you’re up!”
Shangyang: “If you dare introduce me as Cock, I’ll sing a two-person folk duet for your Major General.”
  Tsk.
Wei Yin: “Got it. I’m not that unreliable.”
  Shangyang: “…”
Wei Yin held the pose. Several seconds later, a warm-yellow fluffy ball slowly appeared between his hands.
It was the juvenile form of an avian spirit form, and it was fairly large. It had a pair of round eyes just like Wei Yin’s and was now tilting its head as it studied this strange new world. Two white horns grew from its forehead, half-hidden in its down like little white mushrooms tucked beneath fallen leaves after the rain. Between the horns was a tuft of crest-like feathers with no particular shape at all, sticking up in complete disorder like some muddleheaded fool who had just crawled out of bed.
“Its name is Yangyang.” Wei Yin hugged Shangyang. The two adorable creatures blinked nearly identical huge eyes, and Luo Mengmeng and Old Housekeeper Charlie immediately clutched their hearts and died on the spot.
Major General Sain was stunned too. He had assumed Wei Yin would at most be able to condense some tiny thing, perhaps even one with an unstable form—just like his own spirit form. He had never expected Wei Yin to possess a little fellow like this.
Major General Sain could not resist reaching out and gently stroking Shangyang’s head.
Shangyang did not reject his touch. It even tilted its head and rubbed against Major General Sain’s finger, then opened its beak. “Chirp~”
Its voice was like a baby bird’s, crisp, tender, and adorable.
Wei Yin: “…Wait. What the hell was that just now?”
  Shangyang: “Chirp~”
Wei Yin: “…” Who the hell are you?!

Speaking of that “hate you” line, I really did learn it from my nephew.
Whenever the two little ones get upset, it’s “I hate you, I don’t want you anymore.”
Then the second they’re happy again, it becomes “I love you so much, mwah mwah mwah.”
Hmph. I’m not going to be fooled by you two (≧ω≦)
