Although Film Emperor Wei felt perfectly confident and at ease with the current situation, keeping up an act for too long was uncomfortable too. So since Major General Sain refused to take the initiative, Wei Yin decided he would make the first move himself.
After staying on the lawn for a while, Wei Yin was taken by Major General Sain to exercise. Wei Yin himself took this seriously too, and when he trained, he really threw all his strength into it. In Major General Sain’s eyes, that desperate determination took on a slightly different meaning.
After exercise came lunch. While they waited for the food to be served, Major General Sain asked Wei Yin, “Wei Yin, aren’t you afraid of getting tired?”
Wei Yin had already rested for half an hour, but his breathing was still a little uneven. Hearing Major General Sain’s words, he thought about it, then showed a sweet smile. “Not afraid. Like it.”
Major General Sain thought for a moment and more or less understood—Wei Yin usually had to pretend to be completely unresponsive and rarely had the chance to move around on his own, so of course he liked opportunities to exercise.
But once he thought of that, Major General Sain suddenly froze. He realized he had been too close to the situation to see clearly before—if Wei Yin knew enough to pretend to be stupid, then regardless of the state of his mind, he himself knew why he was pretending and ought to be able to endure having the matter mentioned, shouldn’t he?
After thinking it over again and again, Major General Sain asked indirectly, “Wei Yin. Can you tell me why you only speak to me?”
Wei Yin turned his head when he heard this, delight appearing on his face. “Lanser, candy, warm, doesn’t hurt.”
Major General Sain caught the final phrase. For no reason, his heart gave a sudden jolt, and he pressed, “Do other people hurt Wei Yin?”
The instant Wei Yin heard that, he became visibly frightened. His shoulders drew in. His eyes fluttered twice, and a sheen of tears gathered in them.
“It’s all right. If you don’t want to say it, you don’t have to.” Major General Sain hurried to comfort him and reached out to hold Wei Yin’s hand.
Wei Yin lifted his head. His lashes were wet, but at least the tears had not fallen. He glanced at the hand Major General Sain was holding, then secretly reached out and pinched Major General Sain’s thumb, as though he had seized hold of a stabilizing pillar in a stormy sea.
Wei Yin spoke in a low voice thick with tears. “Kalida, hurts.”
Major General Sain gently stroked Wei Yin’s hair and continued asking, “Kalida hurts Wei Yin, so Wei Yin hates her, right?”
Wei Yin nodded. He was a little agitated now, and the dampness clinging to his lashes finally gathered into large tears. They fell and splashed against Major General Sain’s wrist. Wei Yin tipped his face up like a child complaining to a parent and cried as he told Major General Sain, “Kalida, hate! Mom hate too!”
Major General Sain’s heart ached. Although he had had very little contact with the An family’s descendants, he had grown up listening to stories about the Founder and Earl An. Both his father and mother had told him that if the descendants of the An family ever needed help, they should lend a hand no matter what.
When he was little, Major General Sain had not understood. Then, before he had the chance to understand, his parents died in an accident. After that, his thoughts had been consumed by the accident and by the battlefield, and he had paid less attention to the An family as well. He knew the An family had had a young master, but he had never thought much about it. Only after learning that Wei Yin had already been reduced to this foolish state had guilt finally begun to weigh on him.
“Don’t cry. I promise I won’t let them bully you again.” Major General Sain wiped away Wei Yin’s tears with the pad of his thumb, feeling miserable inside.
“Major General, Madam, lunch is ready.” Charlie walked in from outside. Seeing the scene, he did not ask questions, only smiled at Wei Yin and said, “The chicken soup and spicy rabbit Madam wanted are both ready.”
Wei Yin currently had the temperament of a child, and sure enough, his attention was diverted. He was still sniffling, but the tears stopped.
Major General Sain smiled, pulled Wei Yin to his feet, and said, “Let’s go eat.”
Wei Yin broke into a smile through his tears. “Mm!”
The chicken soup at lunch had been simmered clear and smelled wonderful. The spicy rabbit, however, was not numbingly hot Sichuan-style rabbit, but rather sweet and spicy. Even so, Wei Yin still ate until his belly was round and was extremely satisfied.
While Wei Yin ate, Shangyang remained terribly conflicted—it really was curious what Wei Yin’s “tearjerker memory” had been. Good grief, he could cry on command! Those tears poured out as though they cost nothing.
But Shangyang ultimately did not ask. It had a premonition that once it heard Wei Yin’s answer, it would definitely regret it.
After lunch, Wei Yin’s body could not hold out, so he went upstairs for an afternoon nap. But he ended up sleeping for several hours. By the time he woke, the clock at his bedside already read three in the afternoon.
Seeing no one in the room, Wei Yin stretched hugely, then stood up, twisted his body a few times, and loosened up.
Wei Yin: “Yangyang, where’s the Major General?”
Shangyang: “Downstairs. Kalida is about to come deliver the medicine.”
Wei Yin’s eyes lit up. “The main event is here~”
Shangyang: “What are you planning to do?”
Wei Yin: “Test how that old bastard reacts.”
Shangyang understood at once. “You’re going to reveal that you’ve recovered?”
Wei Yin: “Mm. I definitely won’t be able to hide my recovery forever, so I might as well give them a small shock first and see what happens. If they can’t even tolerate this much, then I’ll have to make much more careful plans for revealing my full recovery later.”
Shangyang: “That makes sense.”
Wei Yin: “All right. I’ll get ready. Remind me when Kalida gets here. Oh, right—can you stop the Major General’s mental power from sensing me when I approach?”
Major General Sain was a high-level Sentinel, and he was so protective of Wei Yin. If he noticed Wei Yin approaching, he would probably send Kalida away ahead of time.
Shangyang: “I can do that. The Major General always wears something that suppresses his mental power. But if we do this, won’t it expose the fact that your mental power still exists?”
Wei Yin: “It probably won’t expose anything to outsiders—Kalida isn’t a very high-level Guide, and with the Major General’s mental power suppressing everything beside her, she’ll probably assume she failed to notice me approaching because she was being affected by him. And it doesn’t matter if the Major General realizes it. You’ll have to appear in front of him eventually anyway. Since he still hasn’t figured out exactly what’s going on with us, we may as well bluff our way through it now.”
Shangyang: “How are we supposed to bluff him?”
Wei Yin: “As long as your acting doesn’t suck too badly.”
Shangyang: “…”
Wei Yin stayed in the bedroom another ten-odd minutes before Shangyang reminded him, “Kalida is here.”
Wei Yin smiled. He raised a hand and mussed up his own hair, then bent down and picked up the socks he had taken off to sleep from the stool. He did not put them on, simply clutched them messily in one hand. Narrowing his eyes, he put on a drowsy, just-awakened expression and opened the door.
Because he had previously acted very afraid of strangers, no one else had been allowed to walk around the villa today. That made things convenient for Wei Yin.
Wei Yin stepped barefoot across the floor, silently following Navigator Yang’s directions. The floor was wooden, but it was still cold beneath his feet. Ever-dedicated Film Emperor Wei put on an aggrieved expression, stood at the doorway and looked around in confusion, then finally headed down the stairs.
Shangyang: “Major General Sain, Charlie, and Kalida are all in the living room. The big living room from yesterday.”
Wei Yin did not answer, but he changed direction and headed straight toward the living room. Once he rounded the corridor, he could already see the greenery at the edge of the room. Only then did Wei Yin say inside his head, “Yangyang, drop the shield.”
Shangyang rolled its eyes and withdrew the mental barrier it had been using to block perception.
So the instant Wei Yin stepped into the living room, Major General Sain immediately noticed him. Kalida was one beat slower, but she looked over at once too.
Wei Yin seemed not to have expected Kalida to be there. He froze on the spot for a moment, then immediately turned a pleading gaze toward Major General Sain.
Major General Sain sat upright on the sofa. Although he wore casual clothes, he somehow gave off a cold, murderous air. His expression was indifferent. When he looked at Wei Yin, none of his earlier gentleness remained; instead, there was a hint of amused appraisal.
Wei Yin understood at once—this one was acting too.
Wei Yin sighed inside his head. “Two tigers can’t share one mountain. It’s time to decide who the real Film Emperor is!”
Shangyang: “…” Fucking idiot.
Compared with Kalida’s surprise, Major General Sain was far more composed. He held out a hand toward Wei Yin and beckoned as though calling a puppy. “Wei Yin, come here.”
Wei Yin blinked, seeming to sense that this person had changed. He looked timidly at Major General Sain and did not really want to go over, but then he glanced at Kalida. Forced to choose between the two, he ultimately walked over to Major General Sain.
Clutching his socks, Wei Yin stood in front of Major General Sain and called pitifully, “Lanser, put on.”
Major General Sain reached out and pulled Wei Yin toward him. Wei Yin lost his balance and dropped directly onto Major General Sain’s lap. Seemingly frightened, he curled up unconsciously, folding himself into a large doll that fit neatly into Major General Sain’s arms.
Major General Sain seemed very pleased with Wei Yin’s reaction. He gave a soft laugh, then took the socks from Wei Yin’s hand. With one hand he caught Wei Yin’s slender ankle; with the other, he pulled the sock onto his foot. While putting it on, his thumb even rubbed twice over Wei Yin’s ankle, as though reminiscing about a flavor he had tasted before.
Even after both socks were on, Major General Sain did not let Wei Yin go. Instead, he seized both of Wei Yin’s hands and held him in a kind of “locked” position. Then he turned his head and inhaled deeply at Wei Yin’s neck. After letting out a satisfied sigh, he lowered his head and kissed the place where Wei Yin’s shoulder met his neck.
He was like a lust-crazed addict, and Wei Yin was the drug he was currently obsessed with.
“Mm.” Startled by the sudden touch, Wei Yin curled in even tighter, his eyes already reddening.
He seemed not to understand why this was happening and only called helplessly in a small voice, “Lanser? Lanser?”
“Hehe, I’m right here.” Major General Sain laughed softly and stroked Wei Yin’s face. But the hand holding both of Wei Yin’s wrists lifted higher, locking Wei Yin even more tightly in place.
Tears gathered in Wei Yin’s eyes, but he did not dare resist. Fear accumulated inside him, and years of experience made his body automatically respond in self-protection—he returned to that wooden state again, blankly allowing Major General Sain to do whatever he wanted with him.
“The effects of your medicine are pretty good.” Major General Sain seemed not to notice Wei Yin’s change. He raised his head and looked at Kalida, his eyes full of interest. “I like this reaction of his. It’s much better than having a wooden doll. But this state is too young—he’s like a three- or four-year-old child. Raise his intelligence a little more. It doesn’t have to be by much; just enough that he won’t only know how to cry in bed.”
Kalida still had not fully recovered from her shock. She knew Wei Yin had already shown some reactions to the outside world, but she had not expected him to be able to recognize people already. What was going on?
Kalida’s heart pounded like a drum. Wei Yin was the “project” she had persisted with for many years. This kind of progress was truly an unexpected delight.
Kalida lowered her eyes and suppressed the complicated emotions in them. Her thoughts raced, and she quickly came to a decision.
“Major General, Madam did indeed begin showing some response to the outside world on the way to Holy Star, but he never spoke before. This is the first time I’ve seen him like this today as well. If we want to stabilize his condition, I’m afraid… we’ll need to perform a new examination on Madam before we can decide on the treatment plan from here.”
